Arctic Monkeys: I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor

 Arctic Monkeys: Audience

1) What is the main Arctic Monkeys audience - demographics and psychographics?

  • Arctic Monkeys' audience are likely to be predominantly white, middle class and reasonably young. Psychographic groups might include Reformers and Explorers. Recent global success pushed the band into bigger psychographic groups such as Mainstreamers.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by the music video for I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor?

  • Audience pleasures would include diversion - the song is upbeat and fast-paced. Fans who followed the band from the early days might find a sense of personal relationship while many young people would get a sense of personal identity from the lyrics to the song (about going out to a club and drinking).
  • Personal Identity- The song is about the night life of young people in Britain, the clubbing and pub scene, it makes you nostalgic about something you are reminiscing about doing, currently doing or looking forward to doing. The costumes in the video are authentic and represent how the people they are singing about would dress. This makes the band seem down to earth so the audience can relate to them.

3) Pick out three particular shots, scenes or moments in the video that would particularly appeal to Arctic Monkeys fans. Why did you choose those moments?
It opens with the singer introducing the song and adding the words 'Don't believe the hype'. I picked out this moment because it shows that the band engages with it's fans and what they do, they're not oblivious to what their fans are doing and will correct them if they step out of line.
The first shot of the drummer singing the adlibs, i picked this moment because shows how that all of the members have their own specialities and work together to produce well put together albums and songs. No one member can work by them selves and they can distribute the work amongst  themselves evenly.
In the background you can see the people on set and the other cameras that are getting the other angles . I picked this scene because it showed how determined they were about making it seem like a real TV station and live performance.

4) How did fans take a leading role in making Arctic Monkeys famous back in 2005?
The fans shared and promoted their music for free in 2005.

5) How are fans positioned to respond to the band? What does Arctic Monkeys want fans to think about their video?
They wanted them to think their music video and the band themselves are authentic , through the music video itself and how it's set up to be an authentic 1950s live TV set, through the costumes that they're wearing being normal clothing and how they're not dressed up and finally the opening line that Alex Turner said to proved that they have not changed and won't.

Arctic Monkeys: Industry

1) How did the Arctic Monkeys first achieve success and build up their fanbase?

They used the early internet and word of mouth to form their fan base.

2) Why was P2P file sharing and MySpace an unexpected aspect to Arctic Monkeys' early success?

Because doing that was letting people distribute and listen to their music for free, which most people wouldn't do.

3) How does the rise of Arctic Monkeys differ from how BLACKPINK were formed and became famous?
Arctic  Moneky's are a  friendship group who formed a band on their own accord whereas Blackpink are a Industry manufactured girl group.

4) Who is Arctic Monkeys record label and how many copies did they sell of their debut album? Why did they choose an independent record label?

Arctic Monkey's record label is Domino Records, they sold 350,000 copies in their first week of releasing their first album.

5) Looking at the wider music industry, has the internet been a positive or negative development for record companies and artists? Why?

I think the internet has been a positive development for record companies and artists because it generates word of mouth, therefore you can earn fans and as you can see based of both Blackpink and Arctic Monkey's fan based they are the epitome of success for them.
