Mise-en-scene:Stranger Things
Lighting
Denotation: During the opening scene of the first episode of Stranger things there is a recurring theme of flickering lighting. Firstly at in the opening scene where the man is running , when the kids leave Mike's house and then at Will's house with the lightbulb and when he's riding his bike home. The scene then switches to a yellow lamp lighting when the boys are playing DnD in in the basement. When Will's mum opens the door there is a luminescent light above her, making the basement look darker than it was before. Will goes up into the kitchen and the light becomes a bright white light. Now Will is talking to Mike there is a light behind them that only touches the sides of there faces.
Connotation:
During the opening scene there is a Mori`e pattern of a flickering light. The man is running in the opening scene and the lighting is presented as quite dark- green and eerie. The camera shifts from being able to see from the mans perspective to whatever is following him perspective. When the man finally comes to the elevator he looks up and we look up with him, he is dragged upwards. And the camera pans out for us to see that. All the while the lighting in the elevator is lit brightly and clear until he is pulled up: there is a flicker seen. This probably means that throughout the entirety of the opening scene and ep1 there is something bad that is around every time a light flickers. When Will is riding his bike home the headlight on his bike flickers and then he falls off his bike because he sees a shadow. This could suggest every time there's danger around lights flicker or blink.
Analysis:
The effect the lighting gives to the audience is , it tells them if, and or when something "bad" may happen. It's an indicator to the audience and it makes them get on the edge of their seat, building suspense. The director does this by making us aware of the connotation of lighting and danger. Setting: Denotation: In the opening scene the man running is in a lab coat. The scene switches to the kids sitting around a table playing DnD , then Mike goes upstairs to the kitchen. The boys then go home and the scene switches to them riding their bikes on the road. Then Will falls off his bike from seeing something that frightened him. He runs home and the setting is changed to Will's house. Connotation: The change of scenery may suggest that there will be a lot happening in the show and there will be a lot of different perspectives throughout. This means that there are going to be many times throughout the show that we see a change in scenery. Analysis: The scenery could have a change of emotion on the audience as it could make them feel the same emotions the character is feeling in that scene. The effect is created by where the character is and what they are doing or what has just happened in that place and or time.
Costume:
Denotation: The kids are all wearing long sleeved clothes and jeans. Even the Mum is wearing a long sleeved jumper in the kitchen. When the kids leave they're all wearing thick coats.
Connotation:
The reason the characters might be bundled up in warm clothes is because it might be winter during that time. So they're dressed according to the weather. The winter like scene could be an indicator that it's near Christmas time.
Analysis:
The audience may feel a type of comfort or homey feeling from the way the characters are wrapped up in comfy jumpers. It may remind them of early winter nights and a cup of hot chocolate at their bedside while they're watching their favourite movie.
