Introduction to advertising

 1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

-Pictures of product (skittles) reminds us what type of product it is. The image tells us that the contents of the product contains original fruits.

-The Textiles of the Logo is in big white block letters, contrasting with the background. There is a rainbow coming out of the space between the I and k, with the skittles product at the end of the rainbow. The skittles at the end of the rainbow could connote to the saying "There is always treasure at the end of the rainbow."

-The background of the advert consists of a rainbow made by the Skittles sweets and clouds in a blue sky behind it. This emphasises their slogan "Taste the rainbow."

-The slogan "Taste the rainbow" is instructing you to eat it; reinforcing the USP that there are many different flavours and wonders in the sweets.

-The colour scheme suggests that skittles brings out a child-like essence out of you when you eat it. The colours are bright and eye catching. Most food related companies use red and yellow in their advertising to compel hunger and as you can see there is an abundance of red and yellow.

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above? slogan rainbow

A USP for Skittles is the slogan " Taste the rainbow" as it is original to the brand. The slogan is very visible at the bottom of the packet and is the only other text besides the name of the brand and sweet itself (Skittles).
Some persuasive techniques that are used is the repetition of "rainbow" in words using the slogan and represented by the Skittle shaped rainbows in the background and on the packet.
