Media language

1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?
They put rhetorical questions like " Is this Harry and Mehgan's biggest mistake yet?"

2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The hot pink resemble gossip and womenly things. The obnoxious yellow and bold white are used to capture the audiences attention.

3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)
The images on the cover are mostly of celebrities who were caught off guard and shows aspects of their lives that they don't want others to see.

4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.
Tatler's colour scheme is elegant and almost simplistic however Heat is the total opposite of that , it's bold and annoyingly eye catching.

Media Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.
   - Prince Harry and Princess Meghan
   - "Posh" Spice or Victoria Beckham
   - Liam Payne
   - Cheryl Cole

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)
The magazine subverts the stereotype that celebrities are perfect by shoing them in ways that the public has never seen them in before. However it's an invasion of privacy the way they capture these photos and they are portrayed so negitively as if they should be repremanded for not telling the public that they're human.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.
On the cover women are represented as the ones who did wrong not the ones who were wronged. The are also the  centre of the magazine, the "hot gossip". They are all put there because they are being exploited through their lives as celebrites , when it comes to women in the media they are always treated as if they were the ones  that did wrong. seeing a woman fail is entertaining to them, it's like watching your favourite show, and all the nostalgia you get from it comes flooding back.

4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class).

The central images on the covers of both magazines are very different, Tatler had a Marchoness with pages filled to the brim of aristocracy yet with Heat it's all about gossip and taking a peak into the lives of people who don't want to be peaked at. Tatler represents what high brow people like and fill their time with, while Heat represents low brow people and what they fill their time with. they are both very stereotypical as Tatler portrays the super rich as money waster- an assumption based on their collection- and as for Heat it represents what upper class people think lower class people do in their spare time.

Grade 8/9 extension tasks

1) How does the front cover engage audiences with possible narratives? Look for stories, cliffhangers, dramatic cover lines etc.
The front cover makes the audience want to know everything about them, curiousity is just human nature.

2) What are paparazzi images and why are they crucial to the front cover of Heat?

Paparazzi images are photos that are taken without consent and are then plastered all of the interent to make money from them, these types of images are crucial for Heat as it fuels their business. If they're not able to capture an image of a celebrity who is not trying to be "perfect" is what they use to take break down the image they have made for themselves and embarrass them with it. All to souly take down their image so they can build up theirs.

3) How does the front cover juxtapose text and images to create contrast and narrative on the front cover of Heat?

The front cover if filled with images of celebrities in their most vunenrable positions yet the cover lines are almost comedic. They don't take their lives seriously because it's comedic relif to them, and not to mention an escape from their own lives.

4) What do these two magazines suggest about representations of social class in the British media?

Social class is a very real and prominent problem we have in societal Britain. Heat obviously represents lower class Britain and the way they're portrayed is gossip hungry , showing how they're inferior to the upper class. Yet when it comes to Tatler-they represent the upper class- they portray themselves as sophisticated. You're almost bitter when looking at it , let alone reading it and you're thinking do they even see themselves the way we see them? Do they know how obnoxious and self-centred they are? I bet they don't even notice ;after all it their world and we're just living in it.
